Indocyanine green (ICG) is administered in the same way as , and is often done in conjunction with a fluorescein angiogram. ICG uses a dye that allows your doctor to examine the choroid, a deeper level of the retina than cannot be examined using fluorescein. This test is conducted on some macular degeneration patients when an abnormal blood vessel is diagnosed, but the exact area requiring treatment is not evident on an FA. ICG dye is safe with few side effects but should not be used on patients who are allergic to iodine or shellfish.

This test is conducted using a digital photography system, and results are immediate and able to be viewed by physician and patient.
