Your first visit with us will be a new patient consultation. If the doctor finds that treatment is needed, he may recommend that it be carried out the same day depending on the urgency of the situation. For this reason, you should be prepared to spend several hours in our office if necessary.
Upon arrival you will be given a registration form to fill out. This form is available online if you would like to print it and bring it with you.
Once your paperwork is complete, you will be taken into a screening room where a trained technician will take a complete medical and visual history. You should have available a list of your current medications and any information pertaining to past eye surgeries or treatments. The technician will also do a series of tests to evaluate your current vision. After that, both eyes will be dilated. This is necessary for the doctor to examine the retina.
Once your eyes are fully dilated this usually takes about twenty minutes), you will be taken to an exam room where one of our board certified and fellowship trained retina specialists will examine you. Based on his findings, he may recommend further testing to either make a diagnosis or determine a course of treatment.
These tests may include: Fluorescein or Indocyanine Green Angiography which study the blood flow of the retina; Optical Coherence Tomography which measures the thickness of the retina; Ultrasonography which views the retina by sound waves; Visual Field which measures the area of vision; or Potential Acuity Meter which measures vision that may be obscured by a cataract.
The doctor will explain all test results upon completion and a recommendation for treatment will be made if needed. Depending on the urgency of the situation, treatment may be carried out that day.
